How Much to Tip Movers
Tipping movers is optional, not built into any invoice. Most people tip anyway when the crew shows up on time, works hard, and handles their stuff carefully. Here's what's actually typical in Ontario, in real numbers.
Do you have to tip movers?
No. Tipping is not required by law and it is not added to your bill. It is a separate, optional thank-you for good work, the same as tipping a server or a delivery driver.
That said, moving is hard physical labor. Crews lift, carry, and wrap furniture for hours, often up and down stairs. Most customers tip when the job goes well.
How much to tip, in dollars
The simplest method is a flat amount per mover, based on how long the move takes:
- Half-day move (under 4 hours): $20 to $30 per mover
- Full-day move (4 to 8 hours): $40 to $60 per mover
- Long or multi-day move: $50 to $100 per mover, per day
Hand it to the lead mover to split, or give each person their share directly. A standard MD Moving crew is 2 movers, so a $25-per-mover tip works out to $50 total for a half-day job.
Or use the percentage method
Some people prefer to tip a percentage of the total move cost instead of a flat per-mover amount. 10% to 15% of the bill, split evenly among the crew, is a common range.
For a $600 move, that's $60 to $90 total, or $30 to $45 per mover on a two-person crew. Either method is fine. Use whichever is easier to work out on moving day.
When to tip more, or less
Tip toward the higher end, or add extra, when:
- The crew deals with multiple flights of stairs or a long carry with no elevator
- They handle something heavy or awkward, like a piano, a safe, or a pool table
- The weather is bad, rain, snow, or extreme heat
- They work fast, communicate clearly, and protect your floors and furniture
It's fair to tip less, or nothing, if the crew shows up late with no warning, damages something and says nothing, or is careless with your things. A tip rewards good work. It's not owed regardless of how the move went.
How and when to actually tip
Tip at the end, once everything is unloaded and placed where you want it. Cash handed directly to each mover, or to the lead to split, is still the most common and most reliable method. E-transfer works too if you arrange it with the crew ahead of time.
If a moving app or invoice offers a tip option, confirm it actually reaches the crew and not just the office before you rely on it.
