Why a lowball quote usually costs more
A number that looks great over the phone and grows once the truck is loaded is the most common way a GTA move ends up expensive. It happens when a company quotes low to win the job, then finds hours or fees to add once you're committed and can't easily walk away. A published hourly rate can't do that to you the same way - you know the number going in: $165 per hour for a 2 person crew, 3 hour minimum, $55 per hour for each extra mover.
What actually keeps a moving bill affordable
On an hourly job, the biggest cost lever is in your hands, not ours: fewer billable hours. A studio typically clears in 3 to 3.5 hours and a 1 bedroom in 3 to 4 - numbers that hold up when the apartment is already packed and the path to the truck is clear. Every box still being packed when the crew arrives, every extra trip down a hallway, and every piece of furniture that needs to be taken apart on the spot adds time to the clock.
- Pack everything you can before moving day - packing materials are supplied if you need them, but doing it early saves the most time.
- Break down beds, shelving and other furniture yourself if you're able to.
- Clear a straight path from your door to the truck, and reserve the elevator or parking spot in advance if your building requires it.
- Group and label boxes by room so the crew isn't guessing where things go.
The heavy-item exception, stated plainly
The only extra charge outside the hourly rate is for items over 250 lbs - a piano, a safe, a pool table, oversized furniture - and it's confirmed before booking, not added afterward. That's the one line item that isn't just hours times rate, and we'd rather you know about it up front than find it on an invoice.
